Lots of overwhelming researches are carried out all over the world in search for cure of lots of killer diseases like cancer. This group of diseases involves the abnormal growth of cells which have the capabilities of invading and spreading to other parts of the body. How Some Cells React To Diseases In The Body

Various researches have proved that some cells use signals to react to stress, malfunctioning of the body and to send messages to other body cells. Some of these known triggers are, for instance, inflammatory diseases (cancer). The normal way of stress response in the body is the modification of proteins called ADP-ribosylation. ADP-riboses (tiny molecules of ADP-ribosylation) are included to directly defined protein sites to control protein function.

ADP-ribosylation is the addition of one or more ADP-ribose moieties to a protein. It is a reversible post-translational modification that is involved in many cellular processes, including cell signaling, DNA repair, and Gene regulation. Improper ADP-ribosylation has been implicated in some forms of cancer. It is also the basis for the toxicity of bacterial compounds such as cholera toxin, diphtheria toxin and others. According to researchers at the Department of Molecular Mechanisms of Disease at the University of Zurich, stated that currently there is a recent method, for the very first time, on how to use tissue samples to monitor  proteins outside the cells that carry ADP-ribosylation as modification. Also ADP-ribosylome was identified including the exact positions at which the proteins have been modified can also be determined. Conclusion can be drawn from this information about signaling pathways in the cells.

Furthermore, the Scientists stated that, these protein modification are greatly involved in some disease processes because substances that hinder ADP-ribosylation react against certain forms of breast and ovarian cancer and greatly reduce the rate of inflammation. Following the research result, changes in all protein in a tissue can now be identified at once, this could lead to an agreement that the modifications of some selected proteins and changes in their position can lead to an investigation of a particular disease which caused it especially cancer, further conclusion can then be drawn as to what therapeutic strategies can be carried out or given.

Further Findings On Protein Modification As Key To Cancer Identification

A research carried out by Michael Hottiger’s group in Collaboration with the University Hospital Zurich (USZ) clearly shows that some antibodies could be used to predict the course of certain types of cancer. The researchers are currently developing more antibodies which would react against selected ADP-ribosylation sites that were discovered in their new study. More research will be carried out to find out if such antibodies also have therapeutic potential against cancer. Hottiger says “there is more to learn about ADP-ribosylation and we are convinced that the medical benefits for cancer infections may be enormous”.

Suffice it to say that, the research on protein modifications is yielding results and in know distant time there would be better diagnostic and therapeutic possibilities for cancer.
